eSmart Networks was appointed to provide the capability for RATP Dev Transit London to run new electric bus routes from their Edgware Garage.

This required the construction of a bespoke brick-built substation including a 3-panel switchboard for DNO (UKPN) adoption.

Provision of a privately owned 1.5MVA transformer supplying a 2.5kA switch panel distributing power to 19 BYD 80kW AC charging outlets and 2 ABB 180kW DC Fast Chargers along with the installation of supporting infrastructure and containment, installed in the environment of a busy working bus Garage. Retro-fit works of this nature require extensive planning and close interaction with the client and installation team to keep efficiency high and client site disruption low.

Furthermore, our civil design, electrical design, and operational teams demonstrated their multi-disciplinary talent in overcoming these complex electrical, civil, and practical challenges.

The team enabled our customers to operate another electric bus route from this depot with another 20x 80kW Bus Chargers. They completed the works well ahead of the program, despite the challenges.

Our teams faced some particularly unique challenges at this site because the chargers were installed on an elevated bus platform. The bus platform is above a railway and below the A40 Westway, which created various civil and electrical complexities.

The works are split over two levels, with the HV switchgear positioned below the deck and all of the charging infrastructure above. Therefore, we designed a scheme that allowed for easy maintenance while providing clear access around all areas of the deck. Additionally, we had to work around restrictions that only permitted limited penetration to attach our chargers, armco, and walkway to the existing concrete deck. We designed, procured, and installed a new type of fixing to facilitate this, all while co-ordinating our work alongside a fully operating bus depot.

Furthermore, our civil design, electrical design, and operational teams demonstrated their multi-disciplinary talent in overcoming these complex electrical, civil, and practical challenges.

The Chair of the Electric Vehicle Association Northern Ireland (EVANI) sat down with the eSmart Networks team early in the summer of 2022 to discuss EV charging infrastructure in Northern Ireland (NI), with a particular focus on grid related challenges. The frustrations of EV drivers, with regards to EV charging infrastructure in Northern Ireland, are well documented, largely through the work of EVANI as well as various statistics published by relevant public bodies and statutory agencies.

Our discussions on the grid-related challenges facing EV charging infrastructure development in NI led to the request from EVANI to have some of the key information, along with further detail, compiled into a summary paper.

We hope that, sharing our expertise through this paper, will assist decision-makers and stakeholders in creating the conditions necessary to enable further progress on EV infrastructure in Northern Ireland.

Infrastructure behind Charging Electric Buses: Check out the infrastructure involved in charging 90+ electric buses every night!

Fully Charged interview with eSmart Networks MD “Behind the charger…..the bit you never see”

Our Managing Director Simon Gallagher was recently interviewed by Robert Llewellyn at Fully Charged.

They discuss how eSmart Networks are delivering the green infrastructure revolution. How we design, install and connect Electric Vehicle charging points across the UK as well as connect solar, wind and other renewable sources to the electricity network. And how we are enabling the biggest change in how we use energy since the industrial revolution.

eSmart Networks are a Lloyds registered ‘Independent Connection Provider’ who design and construct grid connections for EV, Renewable Energy and Commercial Connections from Low Voltage up to and including 132kV.

We are the UK experts in all things Grid – our mission is to get your project connected faster than anyone else.

Build Back Better

As part of the Governments drive to ‘Build Back Better’, they have encouraged Ofgem to allow the DNOs to reinforce their networks where it will enable low carbon projects to go ahead, that otherwise would not due to the cost of the reinforcement.

Current Regulations

The current regulations mean that reinforcement costs to enable a customer connection are passed on to that customer using a cost apportionment formula based on the new capacity connected and the customer’s required load.

Example

An EV Network Operator wants to connect a two High Powered 150kW DC chargers to an existing substation, however the existing substation has a 315kVA transformer that needs to be upgraded to 1MVA with associated HV cabling upgrade.

If the transformer and cable upgrade will cost £100k, the EV Network Operator may be required to pay a £50k contribution in addition to the connection costs making the project unviable.

The Scheme

Under the Green Recovery Scheme announced by the ENA last week, Ofgem will allow the GB DNOs (Northern Ireland is under a different regulatory regime) to spend up to £300m on these types of projects, paying the customer element of the reinforcement.

In the example above, the 150kW charging project may get selected and therefore move ahead.

The main points of the scheme:

The Process

The process is as follows:

Where we can help

There is a detailed list of criteria for how the projects are assessed. We have already supported our customers in the evaluation of projects against the criteria to prioritise those that will score highly in the process.

Each application is effectively a business case. We are writing these business cases for our customers to maximize the opportunity to get funding. This includes:

We expect this scheme to be oversubscribed and see our job as getting the maximum for our customers, which will help deliver the green infrastructure revolution.

Please get in touch with us today by emailing enquiries@esmartnetworks.co.uk for more information or for help to maximize this opportunity and get more of your low carbon technology projects successfully built.

We continue to deliver the green infrastructure revolution and in this project, we are getting ready for the arrival of more 350kW chargers.
